How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Any Device

HEIC is the default photo format on recent iPhones. It is compact, but many Windows, Android and web apps cannot open it.

Quick answer

HEIC is the default photo format on recent iPhones. To convert HEIC to JPG on Windows, Android, Mac or iPhone without installing anything, open FreeImageKit's HEIC to JPG converter in a browser, select the files and download JPGs. Decoding happens on your device, and the JPG keeps no location data.

Steps

  1. Open the HEIC to JPG converter in any modern browser.
  2. Select one or more HEIC photos from your device and wait while they are decoded locally.
  3. Download the JPG files, or a ZIP of all of them.

What HEIC is

HEIC is a container for images compressed with the HEVC video codec. It typically produces smaller files than JPG at similar visual quality and can store extra information. The cost is compatibility: many non-Apple apps, older systems and upload forms do not accept it.

Convert in the browser

A browser converter works on any device with no installation. FreeImageKit loads its HEIC decoder only after you select a file, converts the primary image on your device and never uploads it. Convert to PNG instead if you need a lossless copy, at the cost of a much larger file.

Make your iPhone shoot JPG

On an iPhone, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG instead of HEIC. Existing HEIC photos stay as they are and still need converting.

What changes in the conversion

JPG is lossy, so converting re-encodes the image, which is visually fine at a high quality setting. Only the primary image is converted, burst sequences are not preserved, and source metadata such as location is not carried into the JPG. Keep the originals if you may need them.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?

JPG re-encodes the image with lossy compression, so some detail is lost, but at a high quality setting the difference is rarely visible. Convert to PNG for a lossless copy.

Are my iPhone photos uploaded?

No. They are decoded and converted in your browser and stay on your device.

Is location data kept in the JPG?

No. The exported JPG does not keep source metadata, including GPS location.
