Quick answer
To extract text from an image, select or paste it into FreeImageKit's Image to Text tool, choose the language and select Extract text. The Tesseract OCR engine reads the image inside your browser, so screenshots, receipts and documents are never uploaded. Copy the result or download it as a .txt file.
Steps
- Open Image to Text, then select, drop or paste (Ctrl/⌘+V) an image or screenshot.
- Choose the language of the text and select Extract text.
- Review and correct the text, then copy it or download a .txt file.
How accuracy works
OCR is most accurate on clear, high-contrast, upright text at a reasonable resolution. Blur, glare, low resolution, skew and decorative fonts all reduce accuracy, and handwriting is much harder than print.
Prepare the image first
Crop to the text, rotate the image so lines are horizontal, and use the highest-resolution original you have. Cropping away photos, borders and noise gives the engine less to misread.
Pick the right language
The engine reads best when it knows the language. FreeImageKit supports English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Indonesian, Hindi and Arabic. The language data loads once, about 7 MB for English, then is cached.
Why local OCR suits private documents
Receipts, IDs, contracts and medical letters are exactly the images you may not want to send to a third-party server. Local OCR keeps both the image and the extracted text on your device. Always proofread numbers and names, because a single misread digit matters.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text or image uploaded?
No. OCR runs in your browser, and neither the image nor the extracted text leaves your device.
Can it read handwriting?
Not reliably. The engine is designed for printed text, so handwriting usually needs manual correction.
What is the file size limit?
Images up to 40 MB are accepted. Compress or resize larger images first.
