Quick answer

FreeImageKit makes an image's background transparent for free, in your browser, without uploading it. An AI model (IS-Net) cuts out the subject, everything else becomes fully transparent, and you download a PNG or WebP with an alpha channel, optionally cropped to the subject, with no watermark.

How to use this page

  1. Select an image (JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC), or several for a batch.
  2. The background is removed and shown on a checkerboard. Paint with Erase or Restore to fix edges.
  3. Keep PNG or choose WebP, optionally crop to the subject, and download.

Good to know

  • Transparency needs a format with an alpha channel: PNG and WebP keep it, JPG cannot store it.
  • Soft edges such as hair keep partial transparency, so the cut-out blends onto any colour you place it on later.
  • Crop to subject trims the empty transparent border, with 0–25% padding, so the file is only as big as the subject.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make the background of an image transparent?

Open this page and select the image. The AI removes the background in your browser and you download a transparent PNG.

Why does my transparent image show a black or white background?

Some apps and previews draw transparent areas on black or white. The file is still transparent; place it on a coloured background in your editor to check. A JPG, on the other hand, can never be transparent.

PNG or WebP?

Both keep transparency. PNG works everywhere; WebP files are usually smaller and work in current browsers and most design apps.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The AI model runs in your browser and the photo never leaves your device. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
