Quick answer

FreeImageKit compresses a photo to 20 KB or less for free, in your browser, without uploading it. It fits the photo inside 1,000 px on its longest side, then searches for the highest JPG quality that stays at or under 20 KB. Very small limits like 20 KB usually come from exam, job and ID forms; if a form also fixes the pixel size, resize to that first.

How to use this page

  1. Select one or more photos (JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC) and choose Run.
  2. Each photo is fitted inside 1,000 × 1,000 px, then saved as the highest-quality JPG at or under 20 KB.
  3. Download each image, or all of them as a ZIP, and check the file sizes.

What 20 KB does to a photo

Results of this page's exact settings on our test photos, measured 2026-10-06 in Chrome. Every result stayed at or under 20 KB. Your photos will differ: the more detail a photo has, the lower the quality it needs to fit.

Private by default

Every step runs inside your browser. Your photos are never uploaded to a server.

Never over the limit

If a photo cannot reach 20 KB at these settings, you get a message instead of a file that is too large.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my 20 KB photo look soft?

20 KB is very little data for a full photo, so the quality search has to go low to keep 1,000 px. If you need it sharper, use Resize Image to 20 KB, which shrinks the photo further so each pixel gets more data.

Can I compress a signature to 20 KB?

Yes. Signatures are mostly plain background, so they usually fit at full size: in our test a 552 × 96 px text image stayed full size at 15.4 KB. Crop the signature tightly first so the file holds only the signature.

Does 1 KB mean 1,000 or 1,024 bytes here?

1,024 bytes, like most file managers. A few forms count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, which is about 2% less; for those, choose Customize and set the target a little lower, for example 48 KB instead of 50 KB.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Resizing and the quality search run in your browser, so the photos never leave your device. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
