It shrinks the photo to fit inside 600 px on its longest side, then searches for the highest JPG quality that stays at or under 20 KB. Fewer pixels means each pixel gets more data, so the result is smaller on screen but sharper than compressing a large photo to the same size.
Results of this page's exact settings on our test photos, measured 2026-10-06 in Chrome. Every result stayed at or under 20 KB. Your photos will differ: the more detail a photo has, the lower the quality it needs to fit.

If a photo cannot reach 20 KB at these settings, you get a message instead of a file that is too large.
Resizing reduces the pixel dimensions (here to 600 px) so quality can stay high; compressing keeps more pixels (up to 1,000 px on Compress Image to 20 KB) and lowers quality. Forms that show a small photo or signature are usually better served by resizing.
Choose Customize and set the exact width and height with Crop to fill, or use Resize Image first, then come back here for the 20 KB limit.
1,024 bytes, like most file managers. A few forms count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, which is about 2% less; for those, choose Customize and set the target a little lower, for example 48 KB instead of 50 KB.
No. Resizing and the quality search run in your browser, so the photos never leave your device. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
